If you live in Rockland or Clarence, Thurso is a four-minute cable ferry ride across the Ottawa River. Scottish settlers from Thurso, Scotland, opened the area in 1807. The town split from Lochaber in 1886 and became a ville in 1963, the only one in the MRC de Papineau. Then came wood: the railway in 1877, Singer (yes, the sewing machine company) in 1925, and a pulp mill that changed hands several times before Fortress shut it down in 2019.
The MRC still calls Thurso its main industrial hub, and that's not over. On the old Fortress site, Évolys began commissioning a biocarbon plant in late 2025, with former mill workers on the team. Around it, rue Galipeau and rue Victoria carry the rest: a bistro, a caterer, a jeweller, groceries. Gatineau is 48 km away.

Getting found in Thurso
Thurso sits between two markets. Locals and Lochaber folks looking for a caterer, a jeweller or breakfast at 6 a.m. And people from Gatineau and Ontario, coming over on the ferry or down the 50, searching in English as much as French. With Gatineau so close, a Google profile with no hours or photos means the customer goes to the next town. We'd fix that first, then build a bilingual page that says clearly you're in Thurso and how far you travel or deliver. We're in Montpellier, same MRC.
Thurso has a population of 3,530 (2026), according to the Quebec government's population order.
Petite Nation Numérique is not affiliated with the municipality or the MRC; this information comes from public sources.

DetailsFrequently asked questions
I get customers from Rockland and Ontario. Is English worth it?
Yes. With the ferry, Ontario is minutes away. A well-written English version, not a word-for-word copy of the French, gets you seen on the other side of the river.
I'm a mobile service, like catering or contracting. How do I show where I work?
Pages that name the places you serve, Thurso, Plaisance, Lochaber, Gatineau, and a Google profile with your service area set. Google gets it, and so do customers.
Do you come to Thurso?
Yes. We are based in Montpellier and meet clients in person anywhere in the MRC de Papineau, including Thurso. We can also work entirely online.
My business is small. Is an online presence worth the investment?
Yes, particularly in a rural region. A complete Google profile and a simple site are often enough to stand out from competitors who aren't online. We start with what pays off most for your budget.
