My friend Erik and I were talking about CSS, wondering if there would ever be a truly-WYSIWYG cascading style sheet editor.

Days later, I was browsing Dave Shea's site to find a link for a curious product: Style Master. I was dubious, but downloaded the demo for OS X anyway.

I was of mixed opinions about the idea of Style Master, having been dependent upon Dreamweaver for years before I shed those shackles. I feared that my coding would become sloppy. The prospect of demystifying cross-browser bugs at a glance, though, goaded me on.

The app is certainly attractive. Full OS X-integration, sliding trays and the other bells-and-whistles you'd expect abound. Even the included templates are of a usable caliber, with more, likely, in the full package.

One thing that turned me off is the speed of the app. I'm accustomed to using BBEdit – a more svelte program has yet to be made – and Master, by comparison, is SLOW! I'd already worked out the syntax in my mind and, many processing cycles later, Master was struggling to keep up.

Additionally, the abundance of trays and floating toolbars cluttered up my Powerbook's display to no end. BBEdit's panels are only slighly-less bothersome, but they, at least, are detached.

An application is, ultimately, as effective as how you use it, but Style Master didn't endear itself to me in the time I shared with it.

Try Style Master out. You may find the app to be an indispensible time-saver. As for me, I'm back to BBEdit, the validator and POE.
