David Weinberger asks about the possibility of "social reading":
So, between the solipsism of aggregators and the impersonalism of mainstream newspapers, I'd like a site where my friends and I can read stuff together. We suggest blogs and sites, and the aggregator surfaces the hot posts based on clever metrics and heuristics (mumble mumble handwaving). And we get to comment and annotate for one another.
Joho the Blog: Social reading -- A niche to be filled?
The great thing about Drupal is that is made for these types of community applications -- it assumes there are multiple people communicating, collaborating, and contributing.
So, how does one build a social reading site with Drupal? Well, the built in aggregator allows you to subscribe to as many feeds as you like. You can also categorize the feeds, pulling them together in related "bundles". Members of this social reading site can then blog (or re-blog) individual items, which would get promoted to the front page. Each item of course has comments as well, and for keeping up with the "good stuff", members would subscribe to this front page feed. Alternately, you might also be interested in only the contributions of one author or per category -- and luckily, you can get per-author and per-category feeds with Drupal.
Of course, maybe I passed on "clever metrics and heuristics", but an alternate way of doing this would be to have users moderate individual feed items -- so no re-blogging involved.
