The following are some of my notes from the presentation by WM Leler, CEO, eMarket Group.

Web base business / revenue models

1. Content
2. Advertizing
3. Merchendizing
4. Technology
5. Market data

Content Drive Commerce
a. Especially in the "long Tail"
b. Not just hit properties anymore

1) Sell content / products on the internet
Large demand for web content: video, animation, games, blogs, vlogs, podcast.

To be successful with your web site, you need to
create or get content (aggregation)
find ways to attract people, readers
create monetize avenues

How do you turn visitors into revenue?

2) Advertizing
Place adds on the internet, sponsorship, membership..

3) Merchandise
sell mechandizing related to your website, help spread the word with affiliation / ads.

4) Technology
instead of selling content, sell technology that create content
community, blogs, chatroom, wikis, podcast.

It is the most risky, but offers the best ROI.

5) Market data
Selling information such as user preferences, trends, feedbacks
any information that can be used to sell product or develop new products

Exemples of Wm's start up and success stories

Zat
Started in 1996 at @ interactive screen in Banff, based on Doug Cooper "the secret".
They created a new company build on new technology, online game..

Promoted the new company by networking, gerrilla marketing and ended up winning awards. Ended selling the company in late 90's.

What did they learned?
It's all about balance, talk and listen, but make your own decisions. Have fun! Create something with a value, sell it for the right price. Know when to get out (have an exit strategy)

eMarket
Outsources e-commerce services to people. Selling products for other web sites/commerce.

Who do they target?

Custom stores: douglas adam, sony pictures
Data feed: Amazon
Smartlinks: any sites can sell merchandise
Marketing Services & Data

Important key points:

Do something you enjoy, have fun! It's all about balance. Listen and know when to speak, but more importantly, listen to yourself! Have an exit strategy (know what you will do if or when the project ends)
