Launching Petite Nation Numérique

· 4 min read

Key points

  • Knowledge of the region is what gives a local agency its value.
  • Start small: a one-page site can change how a business is found.
  • A bilingual region needs service in both languages, delivered properly.

Petite Nation Numérique is now open. It is a web, SEO and AI agency for the Petite-Nation, part of Holistic Hybrid Inc., our parent publishing company, and it operates from Montpellier, where we have been based since last year.

The site went live this month. After years of building websites and digital strategies for businesses on the other side of the world, the clients we want to work with are now a short drive away.

Why a web and AI agency in the Petite-Nation?

Because we live here, and we repeatedly observed the same gap.

The Petite-Nation has many good businesses: outfitters, cabins, restaurants, contractors, farms, artisans, small shops. Many of them operate almost entirely on word of mouth. Some have no website at all. Some have a site built years ago by a relative that no one has updated since. Others have a Google listing with the wrong hours.

Word of mouth works well, up to a point. It does not reach the family that has just bought a cottage on the lake, the tourist from Ottawa planning a weekend, or the young couple moving from Montreal who begin every search on a phone. These people arrive every week, and many never find the businesses that would suit them best.

Meanwhile, the large agencies are based in Gatineau, Ottawa and Montreal. They do good work, but they are structured and priced for clients larger than most local businesses, and they do not know the difference between Ripon and Chénéville.

What value does a local agency bring?

Knowledge of the region. This is the point we consider most important.

Anyone can build a website today, with templates, AI builders and inexpensive offers online. What these cannot provide is knowledge of the region: who the customers are in summer versus winter; which searches happen in French and which in English; which local organizations are worth a link; what a business owner in a village of a few thousand people can realistically maintain after launch.

Our experience in web work spans about twenty-five years: co-founding Raincity Studios in Vancouver, helping some of the leading dive operators with their digital and social strategies, co-founding Ceningan Divers, a dive resort in Indonesia, and working with AI since the early GPT-3 days. The tools changed constantly over that period. What did not change is that the best work always began with understanding the place and the people.

What does Petite Nation Numérique offer?

Services covering what a small business or organization actually needs to be found and to retain its customers, all available in French and in English:

  • Websites, from a single landing page to a full site or an online shop, and redesigns of sites that have aged poorly.
  • SEO, particularly local SEO and the Google Business Profile, as well as audits of existing sites.
  • Google Ads and social media advertising, with tracking that shows what brings in customers.
  • Content: bilingual copywriting, newsletters, social media, photography.
  • AI: consulting, assistants, automation and training, for businesses that want to use these tools without losing their voice.
  • Business consulting: plans, marketing strategy and support with funding applications.
  • Hosting, maintenance, domains and email, so that everything continues to work after launch.

The full list is on the services page. It is extensive, and no client needs all of it. Most businesses need two or three things done well.

Our approach with every client therefore begins simply. We review what already exists (the Google listing, the Facebook page, any existing site) and how people find the business today. We then identify the single change that would bring in the most customers for the least effort, and implement it first. The rest can wait until it is needed. Too many small businesses end up paying for large packages they never use, and that is not what we offer.

Services for organizations and municipalities

Businesses are not the only ones with these needs. Non-profits, co-operatives, festivals and municipalities in the region face the same challenges, often with even smaller budgets and volunteer teams: a clear bilingual site, an event calendar people can find, a newsletter that is actually sent. These are practical problems, and practical problems are where we do our best work.

Why start with a one-page site?

Because it can change how a business is found. This principle underlies our entire approach.

A business with no online presence does not need a twenty-page site to begin. It needs a landing page: what it does, where, when it is open, how to reach it, and a few real photos, in both languages, along with a Google listing that matches.

That alone changes who finds the business. It is affordable and quick, and it gives the owner a solid foundation to build on later if desired. We would rather help fifty local businesses get that first page right than build three expensive sites for clients who could go anywhere.

Why is bilingual service essential in this region?

The Petite-Nation is mostly francophone, with an English-speaking community and many anglophone visitors and cottage owners. A local business needs to address both audiences, and to do so properly, not through a machine translation that no one has checked.

Everything we produce is available in both languages, written for each reader. This site, petitenationnumerique.ca, is built on that principle, with French first and English alongside.

This is the beginning. The next step is to meet people, one business at a time. Businesses and organizations in the region wishing to discuss any of these subjects are invited to contact us. A coffee meeting in Montpellier is also an option.

Your business deserves to be found.
