A few months back I wrote a post about Google acquiring Skype. Last week, while traveling with Will Pate in Alberta, after Blogs n Dogs, I read that Yahoo had just announced their intention to launch a VoIP service in the near future.

Tonight, I read on theregister.co.uk that MSN is partnering up with MCI to launch a VoIP service in 2006. The new service - MCI Web Calling - is to be part of Windows Live Messenger, which is due to succeed Microsoft's MSN Messenger service.

At Raincity, we have been looking at VoIP as a cost reduction solution. We are most likely going to use Vonage for our office, and take advantage of their 1-800 service which will increase our ability to better service our clients.

On the road and at home, (where I can't use my cell because, fido's network sucks in my hood) I use Skype

So is this sudden interest in VoIP good for us? I'd say most likely yes; since we'll have more choices, the competitive industry should lower the costs. I'm also wondering how this will affect traditional LAN line and cell phone sales?
