As some of you may know, both Mark and I attend BCIT, where we study New Media Design, CD-ROM and Web Development, a one-year, intensive program that covers a wide range of current software and technologies.

One of the courses we are currently taking is called Industry Operations taught by Danielle Michael, a VP at Radical Entertainment.

Anyway, let's get to the topic...

I am starting a series of articles on Industry Networking. I will be spilling the beans on various players in the new media industry.

I contacted CBC Radio3 a few weeks back to do an informational interview; I was fortunate to receive a response and granted some F2F-time with two of their executive producers. For those of you unfamiliar with CBC Radio3, follow the link!

It was my first time inside the Vancouver CBC fortress, downtown on Hamilton. The building is as tight to get in to as the courthouse, or the airport departure lounge!

Into the Dungeon

I was greeted, and we made our way down to the Radio3 dungeon. There, the team work their magic to produce a new issue, published every Friday. (Except during the summer where they do one every two weeks)

The workspace was plastered with posters of shows. It reminded me of my old room – I wonder if one of my sisters has any pictures left?

The CBC-gang looked hard-at-work, hacking away at the next issue.

I had half-an-hour and about 15 questions to ask.
My assignment: to gather information on the internal working of the popular CBC website and scout for possible internship opportunities.

Interviewing CBC Radio 3

The three of us sat down in an open, corner office. I was impressed with the relaxed atmosphere, the friendliness of the team and the noisy atmosphere. To be honest, it's the sort of place I would love to work at. That said, I have seen a few new media offices and most seemed to have a great work environment.

My questions were primarily oriented towards the internal functioning of the organization. I wanted to know more about the selection process for their contribution pieces, the team functioning and their publishing guidelines.

I was not shocked to hear that they don't take internships, based on union policies. But we should all rejoice in knowing that any brilliant idea will be considered for upcoming issues.

There is Still Hope

CBC Radio3 is a great, online publication with a solid team. Unfortunately, for those wanting to learn, they do not offer internships. But there is an opportunity for talented people who have a great idea to contribute...
